The 2014 Greenbuild Legacy Project: CSED's Energy Efficiency Education Center The Greenbuild 2014 Legacy Project is the Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development’s Energy Efficiency Educational Center. A 130 year old barge board house was donated to CSED and has been renovated as a community hub for green building and energy efficiency education in the Lower 9th Ward. Renovation of the Center began in 2013. Energy efficient upgrades have been made while preserving the house’s original frame and unique wood interiors. The barge board walls, constructed from dismantled bargeboards taken from vessels that once traveled down the Mississippi, are a highlight of the new Center. In areas of the house where original materials could not be salvaged, extensive efforts were made to use reclaimed materials from the New Orleans area. The Center is pursing LEED certification. Signage throughout the center and strategically placed truth windows will give visitors the opportunity to learn more about energy efficiency and green building techniques. The Center will provide energy efficiency DIY workshops and classes and will be a welcomed space for community activities. Future plans for the property include a backyard orchard and workshop. Born in the aftermath of catastrophic flooding in the Lower Ninth Ward, CSED provides community-based support to residents of the Lower Ninth Ward in all aspects of sustainability for area neighborhoods as part of long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts. Their goal is the re-creation and repopulation of a strong community, mindful of its resources and vulnerabilities, with an engaged citizenry that is active, resilient, prosperous, and energy independent. CSED is focused on providing food security and a greener built environment for all of its neighbors and supporting coastal sustainability critical to the prosperity of the entire region. Skilled volunteers needed for the 2014 Legacy Project! Learn more HERE Greenbuild 2014 Community Partners
